Black Avocado pen

This Black Avocado wood blank was turned into a beautiful, elegant pen. The dense, dark grain of the avocado wood gives the pen a warm, luxurious appearance, with subtle variations in color and pattern that make each piece unique.

Process overview

  • Selection: I chose a well-seasoned Black Avocado blank for its stability and striking grain.

  • Preparation: The blank was squared, centered, and drilled to accept the brass tube that forms the pen’s core.

  • Bonding: The tube was glued into the blank and allowed to cure fully to ensure a strong bond.

  • Turning: Mounted on the lathe, the blank was carefully turned to the pen profile, using sharp tools for clean cuts and to preserve the grain detail.

  • Sanding: Progressively finer grits were used to remove tool marks and refine the surface, finishing with a high grit for silkiness.

  • Finish: Multiple coats of oil and/or CA finish were applied and buffed to a soft sheen that highlights the wood’s natural luster.

  • Assembly: The turned components were fitted to the pen kit hardware, aligned, and secured.

Final result The finished pen combines tactile comfort with visual appeal. The Black Avocado’s deep tones and fine grain create a sophisticated writing instrument that feels solid in hand and delivers a smooth, refined look—an ideal piece for collectors or as a special gift.
